Pita bread is a lightly fermented flatbread made with wheat flour, yeast, water and salt. It is native to the Middle East and considered one of the oldest foods present from the time of the Egyptians to the present day. Its procedures have varied since then, its essence remains intact, preserving its basic ingredients and reinforcing traditions. The name ''pita'' comes from the Greek word ''πίτα'' which means cake. This delicious bread is used as an appetizer to accompany sauces such as homemade vegan sauce, tahini, mustard, among others that are served at parties and family celebrations. Sometimes it is filled with falafel, marinated tofu, sautéed chickpeas, lentils. In addition, you can add vegetables such as cucumber, favorite tender sprouts, tomato, lettuce, piquillo peppers and other vegetables to the filling that add color and attractiveness to this appetizer. At home you should not miss pita bread to accompany strong meals, it is also ideal to use in mid-afternoon snacks. The little ones at home love it spread with jam, butter or gratin cheese. Pita bread is very versatile, prepare it easily at home with our recipe today. Ingredients (10 loaves)
  • 290 ml warm water
  • 7 g dry baker's yeast
  • 520 g baking flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
Preparation (90 minutes approx.): 1. Dilute the yeast in warm water. 2. In a container, mix the flour, salt, sugar and oil. 3. Add the water and knead until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous dough. 4. Weigh the dough and divide it into 10 portions. 5. Form a ball with each portion of bread, cover them with a cotton cloth and let them ferment for about 45 minutes or until they double in volume. 6. Heat the oven to about 200ºC with the tray where the bread will be baked inside the oven. 7. Flour the work surface. Take a ball of bread and stretch it into a circular shape. Do the same with 3 more balls. Carefully remove the tray from the oven and cover it with baking paper. Place the 4 pita breads on the tray and bake them until they puff up. 8. Remove the loaves carefully and cover them with a cloth to keep them moist and warm. 9. Repeat the same process until all the breads are baked. 10. Once all the loaves are baked, make a longitudinal cut in each loaf and fill them. Enjoy!
