Let's learn a little more about the origin of this salt.
Origin of Maldon salt
This salt, used as a condiment with unparalleled characteristics in gastronomy, has its origin in a stretch known as the estuary of the Blackwater River, located in the Maldon Municipality, a coastal town in the east of England, specifically in the county of Essex. Its artisanal methods and techniques have been in force since the Romans and other Germanic tribes such as the Saxons.
Since ancient times, the force of the tides exerted directly by the lunar changes has been used, making a type of water traps called bathtubs. In this way, the salt water is trapped and through a completely artisanal process, the water evaporates, giving rise to the finest salt crystals that we can find in gastronomy.
What types of Maldon salt can you find on the market?
The most popular are two in particular, flake salt and flake smoked salt.
Salt flakes
It is the most similar to common salt, although it is found in the form of fine and delicate flakes. Flaked smoked salt goes through an additional process, that of smoking. However, this is a well-kept family recipe that we can only enjoy when eating. It is an excellent quality product that provides a delicate touch of salt smoke flavor, ideal for the preparation of fish, seafood and meat in general.
