Hazelnuts are a rich fruit of Asian origin whose varieties spread throughout Europe. Spain is considered the third world producer of hazelnuts and Catalonia is the most important community for this crop.

The production of hazelnuts in Catalonia is delimited by the lands located in the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Conca de Barbera, Priorat, Terra Alta and Terragonés in the province of Tarragona. The hazelnuts grown in these regions are protected by a designation of origin.   Denomination of Origin: Hazelnut from Reus The Hazelnut of Reus concentrates 95% of the hazelnut trade in the region. These hazelnuts have had a designation of origin recognized since 1997. The varieties of hazelnuts that are protected by this designation are presented to the consumer with shells (large and very large), in kernels and toasted. Among the varieties that are protected are: pautet, negreta, gironella, morella and culplana.
